Sarah Maple

Sarah Maple (b. 1985) is an award-winning artist renowned for her bold, provocative work that challenges societal perceptions of identity. Drawing on her mixed religious and cultural upbringing as a British Punjabi, Maple offers incisive commentary on the intersections of race, religion, gender, and the art world. Working across painting, performance, photography, collage, and video, she combines sharp critique with subversive humour, prompting audiences to confront their assumptions and reconsider entrenched beliefs. By weaving personal narratives with universal themes, her work is both resonant and widely accessible.

Maple graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Kingston University in 2007, the same year she won the prestigious ‘4 New Sensations’ award for emerging artists, presented by the Saatchi Gallery. She was awarded a Sky Arts Academy Scholarship in 2015 and has been shortlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize in 2022 and 2025. Her work - spanning visual art, film, and performance - has been exhibited internationally at institutions including Tate Britain, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, and Fralin Museum of Art.

In 2019, Maple was selected for Syllabus V, an independent l earning programme led by Wysing Arts Centre. In 2020, she created a semi-autobiographical video work in the style of a sitcom, which debuted on Sky Arts. More recently, she completed a commission with the Decolonising Arts Institute at UAL, undertaking a residency at Bradford Museum and Art Gallery; a print of the resulting work was acquired by 20 UK art institutions. Her work is also held in collections including Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Soho House, and The Hyman Collection.
In 2023, Maple published of book of her 650 piece installation Labour of Love with KochxBos Publishing. She lives and works in Sussex.
