Reference: 216

Status: Sold

Full Description:

This large, impressive dhal, or shield, comes from 17th century India and is made from lacquered leather. Remnants of the handles survive at the rear, but the associated pad is missing. The four bosses that sit around the shield’s centre are highly detailed, with the delicate designs inlaid with gold and complemented by intricate openwork.

In her 2017 book, Salam Kaoukji[1] provides details of a single shield boss with similar openwork from the Al-Sabah Collection in Kuwait. She explains that it is probably Deccani in origin. With the stylised peony flowers on the bosses of this shield being similar—although more delicately fashioned with greater detail and less gold—the same geographical attribution is likely.
